MUSIC VIDEO EVALUATION

        Evaluation

Our brief to make a music video for a target audience of our own choice, who were young teenage girls. The song we chose was ''22'' by Taylor Swift. My role in the production process was to find a location, and to come up with the reason for why we chose the song. I also designed a mood board and wrote the narrative of our music video. The mood board was very useful because it reflected on the narrative of the music video. Furthermore, whilst we were filming for our music video I was acting in the music video. In lessons we did a lot of work to contribute to the research. We looked at other songs and T.V shows that link to our music video. In addition we looked at a lot of music video and said out opinions on them, and whether we liked them or disliked them.

The chose pop as our gnere because we know that it will be more appealing to pur target audience as they are young teenage girls. We kept to the conventions of the actors in the video to be young female teengaers as this will as this will attract out target audience easily because they are the same age. One music video that inspired ours was ‘Young’ by Tulisa and we used the idea of going around with your friends and having fun. This was effective because within her music video she reflected most of the things that a teenger would do and it helped me and group come up with most of our ideas.

When were filming we only went out one day due to the fact we left the filming really late. Therefore we were wearing the same clothes and most of the location was in the same area. Throughout the process of editing we faced a few problems. One problems we faced was that we new to iMovie, so it was hard to use however we got the hang of it eventually. We asked teachers and our peers to help us so we can do as much editing as possible. In addition we were only a group of two so it was quite hard to get most of the work done. Another problem we faced was cutting certain bits out of the filiming we did and flipping around the images. Eventhough we didnt have as much footage as we planned to have we used whatever we had.

Overall, I believe that we did a lot of work in making the music video however we didn't take advantage of the time we had as this prevented us from doing extra filiming and lip-synching which was necessary. I think that we left everything to late, therefore this led us to not exactly following our narrative. If I were to do this again I would take advantage of the time that I have.

MUSIC VIDEO EVALUATION

Our brief was to make a music video for a target audience of our choice. We decided that we would have a female target and chose to do the song ’22’ by Taylor Swift.   My part in the production process was to contribute to develop who are target audience was going to be, find a theory to our narrative, do a lot of research into other music videos and link it to intertextuality with other media texts, why we had chosen the genre we did, come up with a questionnaire and write up an artist biography.  We had done a lot of work in lessons to contribute to our research. We looked at other music videos and wrote up what we liked about them and disliked about them so when choosing our genre and song we had a clear idea of what we wanted to consist in the music video. I also researched movies to which I could link our music video to and inspire our music video.
We chose pop as our genre because we know that stereotypically, this is a female subjugated genre and we were a group of two girls so it worked. We kept to the conventions of the actors in the video being young as this will help appeal to the target audience as they will be the in the same age range. Another convention that we decided to include was the link between lyric and visual. At one point when she sings ‘it feels like a perfect night to dress up like hipsters’ one of the girls in the video has a hat on her head and is looking at other ones. This is not exactly her full dressing like a ‘hipster’ but linking lyric to the narrative.
One music video that inspired ours was ‘We are Young’ by Tulisa and we used the idea of going around with your friends and having fun because our music video was supposed to be light and airy. To plan our video we came up with the narrative together and we made a story board and planned what locations we would go and film at. When we went to film it, it was okay but not the best. We managed to get some footage and some nice shots during the night.
One thing we could have improved on is communicating more and going out to film more. We only went out one day so the footage was in the same clothes and there was no lip-synching on the video because we left all the filming too late. One problem we faced during editing was that we were new to iMovie and there were only two of us, but we got the hang of it quickly by asking our teacher and peers for help. Another problem we faced was some of the footage that we had filmed was on an iPhone so when flipped around there were black edges. We realised there was nothing we could do about this as we didn’t have enough footage so we just had to use what we had.
We decided that the video can be shown on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, etc. We also thought that our video can be shown on YouTube, as many teenagers watch videos on there and they find new music and videos on there. In some pop videos, not all, women are seen as sexual objects and we wanted to challenge that, as most of our targeted audience is young females, we didn't want to put anything like that in the video, but instead how good friends teenage girls can be and how they can have fun together. Overall I don’t think our music video was very good. There wasn't enough footage and there was no lip-synching, which was necessary. I think we left everything too late and we didn't put in enough effort.
One of my favourite shots is when Tasnim and Amira are laughing and it fit with the lyrics because she was singing, ‘were happy, free, confused and lonely at the same time’ and it’s a nice shot of how both of them are happy and laughing and having fun. I think we did try to break pop conventions, as in the music industry there is very much a sexualisation of females by having them wearing very little clothing and I think we attempted to break the conventions by having two friends who get along very well and enjoy each other’s company and are going out together and having fun.
I think we presented the social groups of teenage girls well because the video consists of them going shopping and that’s what ‘stereotypically’ teenage girls ‘love’ to do. I think we sort of reached our target audience as people in our class could see the clear femininity in the video but I don’t think we were that successful in reaching them. However some of the feedback was on how bad it looked because there was no clear narrative and we didn’t include the things we wanted to, like at the beginning of the video we were going to have girls in school looking bored sitting in class and then when they leave school they forgot about all the stress of school but instead go out to have fun. Whereas the video just starts with the two actors going shopping straight away so that’s another thing i think we could have improved, by adding more footage.

If I were ever to do this again I would put a lot of time and effort into it. I would focus on having a schedule and filming more and having clear instructions and narrative. Also I would have everything down in order and know what was happening at all times and planning effectively.

MUSIC VIDEO NARRATIVE

At the start of the music video we will be in school trying to have fun as we are young female teenagers who are in school and extremely bored. In order to show this we are going to have shots of our heads down with books open looking really sleepy and tired because we're bored.
We then want to show a group of students leaving the school and they all look happy because school is finally over. Then a group of girls are running out of school and showing that they are happy. The start of our video fits with Todorov's theory as it shows a state of equlibreium where everything is normal and in a clam state. It is then shown that they decide to go out shopping in places like Camden Lock, and shopping centres like Oxford Street and Westfield.
Whilst they're at the shopping centres they will be trying on new clothing and coming in out of the changing rooms in the shops. It shows a transition to where things were in a state of normalcy to them going around shopping and having fun which defies the sterotypes of a female group of friends because stereotypically they are meant to not get along, which can be seen in typical high school movies, which conform to the convention of groups of friends that are thought to not typically get along.
They will then make their way out of the shopping centres with a lot of shopping bags in their hands and their facial expressions will show that they're having a lot of fun and enjoying their time together. After that they make their way to McDonalds to eat. This is because it is supposed to show the audience that they enjoy eating in places, and as a teenager myself I would  definitely go places like there to eat. This is when the narrative refers to Todorov's theory as this is the part of recognition where they realise they cant spend their time shopping because they have to go to school and they have to worry about what they are doing.
The last location will end on the girls back to school sitting in the classroom which they were in at the start at the start of the video. This is supposed to show that they cant run away from school and they are left with no choice but to face reality. Moreover the locations which we have chosen throughout the whole video are all effective because the target audience will recognise them straight away and every time they see a new one, it makes them more curious about the next. This grabs their attention and keeps them interested throughout the video.
The video ends in a circle, as a loop as it shows that being in school is whats normal and what they need to do.

TODORIV THEORY & GENRE AND CONVENTIONS

TODOROV THEORY:

In our music video we use Todorov's theory in which our music video is constructed with our narrative.
1. Equilibrium: Our music video starts with a group of female teenagers in school looking bored and tired with their school work. There are close up shots of all the girls showing their facial expression so the audience have a clear understanding of how the girls feel. This fits with Todorov's theory of equilibrium of everything being as it should be be. For example students are stereotyped to always be tired and bored of school work so this fits in with the equal balance of powers. Everything is as it should be these group of teenagers are in school, learning even if they are bored.
2. Disequilibrium: A disruption of the order that things should be in happens. For instance the next part in our music video is that suddenly all the girls start packing up their things and start to leave school. There would be a long shot to show the girls are in a classroom and then showing the audience that the girls are packing up and planning to leave the school. Their then would be a birds-eye view shot from above the school of the girls all leaving the school. This is the disruption in the narrative where the main characters are placed outside their normal social framework.
Our music video doesn't follow an exact step by step of Todorov's theory but key points of his theory. For example in,
3. Recognition: the characters don't realize that they can't spend their whole time shopping and enjoying times with their friends so instead they are seen leaving the shopping centre with bags and laughing and enjoying being with each other. This would be shot in a long shot showing the girls leaving the shopping centre with bags and making their way to a place to eat.
4. Reparation: As there is no recognition in the disorder that has occurred in the video there is no actual transformation shown, where there is a clear indication of reparation as there is no identification to the characters that a disturbance has occurred in their usual state of balance, that occurs in their everyday life. So instead they are shown to just carry on enjoying their day out together.
5. New equilibrium: The end of the music video displays a unexpectedness to the audience as the characters end up making their way back to school showing that the new equilibrium is similar to the equilibrium at the start however at this point the characters come to their own sort of recognition that they can't spend their lives in shopping center's and eating and hanging out, but in fact that they have to actually go to school and can't run away from their school lives no matter how much they want to and do actually have to concentrate on school.
Our narrative is driven by attempting to try and get the audience to understand that the characters understand that they have to go back to school and that also the narrative involves a transformation of the characters themselves understanding that they have to be grown up and face the stress of their exams and school work head on and not run away from it, so there is also a display of the characters transformation through the situation and disruption.

GENRE AND CONVENTIONS:

The genre we have chosen is pop because we feel that we are close in age with a lot of our target audience and as we are girls we understand the appeal teenage girls have towards the pop genre.
We followed through the conventions of the pop genre as we have artists in a lot of fashionable and stylish clothes. The characters in our music video wear a lot of casual clothes but stylish at the same time because we wanted to portray them as quite girly as the song we have chosen, 22 by Taylor Swift, the main lead is very femineine in the video and we wanted to portray that through the clothing.
Another convention is that we wanted to portray the characters as happy and enjying themselves and life in the video. We did this by starting the video with the girls packing up their things loooking bored with their life, but when they go out and hang out with their friends, they look content with their lives.
A lot of pop genre is nowadays associated with having teens in clubs and partying and alot of the imagery is based on sex or partying as this is what is stereoypically what society assumes teens do these days. We however did not follow through with these conventions and instead kept it more girly and less grungy.
We did not have the characters in excessive make up even though this this said to express the artists feelings we instead kept it minimal because we felt that they are still teens and we wanted it to be more about them feeling content and enjoying themsleves in the music video because we felt this was the best way for the characters to express themselves and that is what the wole song is about, having fun.
We wanted to create a loud and lively atmosphere yet simple like it was years ago because these are still young girls, just having fun and enjoying themsleves. They are not worrying about school.
We end the video with them going back to school because we wanted to show that reality hits in and that they can't always just be having fun all the time.

TARGET AUDIENCE & SONG DECISION REASONING

TARGET AUDIENCE:

For our music video we have chosen females between the age of 14-18 as our target audience. This is because the female teenagers within that age range are usually at school and doing exams and we want to reflect this in our music video as it is based on teenagers who supposed to be not worrying about school work and ''forgetting deadlines''. Therefore when the audience are watching the video they will understand what female teenagers are like as it will include: shopping, going out, going to cinemas. Furthermore I am the same with in the same age range as the target audience we have similar hobbies, likes and dislikes, therefore are video will appeal to them.

SONG DECISION:

The song we have chosen is Taylor Swift 22. We have chosen this song because it’s a popular song by a female pop/country artist that many people admire.  In addition the song is very catchy and upbeat therefore the target audience will feel more attracted to it. In addition to that the main theme is ‘’forgetting deadlines’’ and school work, therefore this will make it more appealing to the target audience because young people in general like to have fun and go out all time.

Furthermore when you’re a teenager you don’t just want to be working at school or revising all the time because it is hard to concentrate on things like as they don’t know what the adult life is really like. Therefore our target audience is the perfect range because when your 14, its like the start of your teenage life and when your 18 it kind of the end of your teenage life and you will begin to see the adult world. However the message we are also trying to get across to the target audeince is, as much as they love going out and having fun, they have face reality and that's why at the end of the video we have chosen to make them go back to school.

LOCATION, CUSTOME & PROPS

Location of Music Video

The location at the start of our music video is in school and its supposed to show the audience that teenagers are tired and not really not that bothered with school. this then leads onto when the school bell rings and the students rush out of school like they're really desperate to leave - this is also supposed to show the audience that what they feel about school on a day to day basis. Then when the chorus of the song comes in the group of teenagers get on a bus making their way to a shopping centre and that will be in Westfield. They all be trying on different clothes and they walk out of the shops with many shopping bags. The location is a popular shopping centre therefore it's supposed to show that's teenagers enjoy it and that's where they would go for shopping. In addition it also shows that they're all happy and enjoying their time together. After they leave the shopping centre they go to eat in McDonalds. This is because it matches to what our target audience as that location is somewhere which teenagers would go to eat. You wouldn't exactly find then in coffee shops and I know this because I'm a female teenager and I would usually go there to eat with my friends. Finally the last location will be the girls making there way back to school and this is effective because they cant run away from school and their education, they will just have to face reality.

Costumes
The types of clothing we will use is casual clothing as our music video is for teenage girls and in the video these girls are out and about having fun with their friends, so we didnt want to have them dressed up so much because we didnt want them to look older than they are and we wanted them to be young girls out enjoying themsleves. The style of these characters is casual, and quite girly. Because our target audience is towards female teenagerw we will have them dressed this way as it will be more appealing to them. It will be appealing to them because it will draw them in as they will like girly outfits and casual clothing. Ideologically girls are supposed to like bright colours and girly, casual clothes so our target audience will be attracted to the fact that they are of similar age to the character's and how their likes are similar.

Props
In our music video our characters willl use props such as mobile phones, because they are teenagers and it is believed that teenagers spend a lot of their times on their phones which is true so the character willl be talking on the phone and texting showing that they are in contact with their friends and that they are sociable with their friends.
We will also use props such as shopping bags to show the characters shopping and to show what teenage girls like spending their time doing on a day to day basis. Girls are often associated with being 'shopaholics' and since our video is about girls hanging out together, having fun we wanted to show that shopping is a big thing that girls like to do so we had the characters go out in our music video to a big shopping centre, try on some clothes and leave with shopping bags showing them going out and enjoying their time with each other.

Questionnaire Data Analysis

20 people filled in our questionnaire and this is our analysis of the answers we received and why this research benefits us and our music video.

Question 1: How old are you?

The majority of the answers were that the audience was aged at fifteen and a few at sixteen which benefits us as our target audience is an age between 14-18 which means that our video will appeal to people within the same age range.

Question 2: What is your gender?

The majority of the people who answered our questionnaire were females; female: 11, Male: 9 and this very important to us as our music video is targeted at teenage girls so it is important to understand what they like and their preferences so we can apply that to our music video which will then make it enjoyable to watch.

Question 3: Who is your favourite music artist?

A lot of the boys preferred rappers and male artists however a few of the girls liked male artists as well such as Chris Brown and Justin Timberlake which could link to their music preference as both artists are big in the pop industry which is important for our video as it tells us that our target audience who are females, like a lot of pop music but also they like the singes to be around their age and to be big artists that are well known. Similarly the preferred female artists were people such as Jessie J and Katy Perry who are also very big and well known in the industry and make music that appeals to their fan base and their audience who are of a similar age to them.

Question 4: What type of genre do you prefer?

The majority of males answered saying that they liked rap music the most and the majority of females said they liked pop the most. The other genre that females said they like as well was indie/rock/ country and a one of the males said they liked rock music as well. This is beneficial and useful as, as our video is targeted at females mostly and as we are doing a pop song it’s important that we know that a lot of females are into pop rather that rap and rock.

Question 5: Where do you find your music from? (More than one answer)

The majority of the audience stated that they find their music on the internet and mostly on YouTube while only a few said that they find out new music through friends or radios or TV.

Question 6: What is your favourite colour?

A lot of the female audience said that they like colours such as white or red which are colours that we would then use in our video showing that these types of light, feminine colours attract our target audience. Most of the males answered that they prefer colours that are dark such as black or blue however many of the girls also said that they liked the colour blue which again we would consider using in our video as it’s something that attracts and draws in our target audience.

Question 7: What types of magazines do you buy?

The majority of people who answered this question were females and said that they read magazines such as ‘OK magazine’ and ‘We Love Pop’. The few females who do read magazines only read them about celebrities and some about music, in We Love Pop magazine. This is important as this shows that if we were to advertise the video were we would do it or where we would show it such as the We Love Pop website and also whether or not in would be good to advertise in magazines and such things.

Question 8: Where do you listen to music on? (More than one answer)

The most popular answer was that people listen to their music on the internet and on YouTube. This is important because we know now that our target audience likes to listen and find their music on the internet which would be the best to advertise and show and our video on, as it is so popular and were our target audience find and listen to their music on.

Question 9: How often do you listen to listen to music?

The most popular answer on this question was that the audience listens to music everyday and some only sometimes. This isn’t necessarily important to how to make our video appeal to our target audience, however it shows that songs have to be catchy and nice to listen to if they are going to be played nearly every day.

Question 10: Are you more interested in the music video or the song?

The majority of the audience said that they prefer the song rather than the video as the lyrics can sometimes mean more than the video and can easier to be more easy to relate to as they can interpret the song as they wish to. However the lesser few who said that they enjoy the music video more said they preferred the video more as they get to enjoy a more visual side of the song and get a sense of what the artist wished to happen in the song and also what the artist wanted to be narrated through the song. This is beneficial to us as we can make our video appeal to our target audience by making a video which they wish they can see an interpretation of what we believed the artist to show and using their own ideas of what they thought the song to be about and making a video which our target audience would enjoy very much.

Question 11: Who is your favourite female artist?

This also shows us that a lot of artists that the audience like are a lot of artists who are big in the pop industry.

Question 12: Who is your favourite male artist?

Similarly to question 11 a lot of the artists that the audience liked are artists who are of a young age and close to the age range of the audience and also artists who are famous and big in the pop industry.

Question 13: Who is your favourite band or group?

A lot of the answers to this question was that they preferred bands rather than groups as bands play their own instruments and are better at live entertainment which means that having a lot of people or a ‘live show’ sort of atmosphere in the music video may appeal to our target audience as most of the girls stated that they liked bands rather than groups.

Question 14: Do you like seeing the artist in the music video?

Question 15: Do you think pop is a genre for both boys and girls?
The majority answer on this question was no. This is important as considering our target audience is widely female that both females and males think that pop should be considered more for females and not males which is beneficial as our music video is for a pop song and if it was something like a rock song it wouldn’t appeal to our target audience

MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS

JASON DERULO ft. 2 CHAINZ: TALK DIRTY

This music video starts of with the two artists singing. The mise-en-scene of the artists is that their built up bodies are very attractive to some female audiences and that’s their interests in men. One of the artists is wearing a shirt however you could see his body. This is usually very attractive to females who are interested in built up bodies. However I personally like Jason Derulo and his body therefore this music video engages me in and its eye catching to me. The other artist in this music video is wearing shades belt, and he has golden chains and silver rings. this shows that he is rich and he own a lot of fashionable things which also attracts a lot of women. Furthermore Jason Derulo is wearing a shirt which is open therefore the audience could see his built-up body, and that attracts a lot of women.

This music video does not have a narrative however the lyrics do match up with the video. It is in chronological order. The start of the is off one of the artists showing his attractive body and the other wearing his shades and belt (rich) and then it leads onto him being surrounded by a lot of women and they are all kind of touching him gently and treating him like he is someone special person. Furthermore within the video there are a lot of close-ups of the main artist (JASON DERULO) which attracts the audience. Also the there is a birds eye view of the main artist with a lot of women surrounding him and there is also long shots. This suggests that women are treated as sex objects because they are wearing shorts, belly tops and bras.

Another thing about this video is that the majority of the lighting within the video is dark and the you could only see the artists face and body. This shows us that this video is deliberately making the audience concentrate on the main artists and the way these women are portrayed. Also another thing which is effective is the way the lighting changes, it starts of with really dark lighting and then as soon as the other artist starts singing the lighting changes.
Amira Elmi

Lana Del Rey-Born to Die

The target audience of this music video is indie/sad core lovers aged between18-28 because a lot of the content in the video is mature and it would be hard for young people to interpret and understand the meaning of the video, and a lot of the singers fans are young adults. It is mostly aimed at females because the video is about love which most people associate with females and also abusive and argumentative streaks which females can also relate to.
The audience will see the music video as a narrative music because the video tells a story which will interest the audience and if people are in relationships that have similar problems as shown in the one in the video then they can relate to it however it also informs people of the realisation of what can happen in relationships, especially those in young relationships.

The music video is opened with the main character a young female and a heavily tattooed man hugging each other in front of the American flag. The main lead stares at the camera while the man she is embracing, has his eyes closed which could mean that they are in a relationship and could give the impression that she is more important to him than he is to her, or he has done something to possibly jeopardize their relationship.

The next scene is shown in what looks like a palace as the viewers are shown the beauty of the place and then shown a long shot of the lead sitting in what looks like a throne and dressed elegantly in a white dress which is normally associated with the idea of purity and innocence and also looks like she is something like royalty, sitting on a throne with two real tigers by her side giving her an air of power and showing her dominance as the tigers are so relaxed around her as if they are there to protect her and therefore she must have some sort of command over them.

The next shot is completely different from the first two and is showing the protagonist in casual clothing and she is with same man as before and he is also in casual clothing, showing some sort of narrative unveiling giving the impression that there is a story behind it.
The low key lighting suggests a dark atmosphere but also gives off a romantic vibe with the couple there in the night. They are in a deserts, or woods and that also gives off a romantic element as they are a couple, alone and she speeds up to him and he kisses her which suggests a sexual attraction between the two.

The scene then goes back to the artist in the palace like place suggesting that she is having flashbacks to the times when she was with her lover.

The scene then appears to take a turn for the worse as there are abusive traits being used as the man pokes the female’s head and forces her to kiss him and mid shots are used throughout this to show the couple from far away but close enough to see the facial expressions on both characters. This is probably used to show the posture and forcefulness of the man but to also show the two big differences between the man and the women’s facial expressions.

The next shot is a mid shot of the artist lying in bed wearing a white silk gown again showing expensiveness behind it but also a theme of innocence associated with her. The shot is then half faded into black and that connotes that something bad is going to happen and it is then shown Lana and her lover lying beside her stroking her arm and this is still a mid shot and you can see their facial expressions and hers looks a bit like she is somewhat scared and the idea of her facing away from him shows that she is maybe scared of him and wants to hide her pain from him however for him she has become an obsession and he now controls her.
Because she is frowning it shows that maybe she is sad and shows the audience that she no longer wants to be with him, in a relationship with someone whom she feels trapped. With the man smiling it suggests that he is happy and content with how things are going and he does not find his actions wrong in fact it seems the opposite he finds them right.

As the flashbacks continue the man now his hand around her throat strangling her and suggesting that he has authority over her which then shows her as the victim and her face in the shot is shown to have tears in them which leads the audience to believe that she is very badly affected by what’s happening and allows the audience to sympathize with her.

The scene then shifts back to them in the car with their casual clothing on again and as the lyrics in the song between to intertwine with the music video the audience gets the sense that the man is about to commit suicide as he leans over to kiss his partner and the couple approach a bright red light which the audience can identify from the reflection on the car but the couple are too busy kissing, which shows the theme of love and obsession from the man’s point of view, and this alerts the audience that they are approaching something dangerous because the colour is shown to be red which symbolizes hazards and danger.

Lana is now shown in a white dress which again shows the theme of purity and approaches a door which she pushes open and a beaming white light is shown across it and this connotes the idea of her now being in heaven.
The next shot is close up which zooms out into a long shot showing the man holding Lana and showing the damage that has happened to him. He has cuts on his face whereas Lana is covered in blood and appears to be dead. The look on the man’s face insists that he is sorry and remorseful about what he has done. The flames in the background illuminate both the female and male and with the low key lighting and with them walking in the middle puts all the focus on them, and also suggests that there was a crash but only Lana dies in the man’s attempt to kill himself with Lana failed.
The man is now living in his own hell and she is living in her version of ‘heaven’ and is at peace which is shown in the previous scene. The lyrics of the song fit in with the music video which gives it a narrative for example, ‘we were born to die’ suggests that the relationship was damaged and broken but the two people loved each other that their relationship was doomed from the beginning and also living life on the wild side and loving‘recklessly’.

The video then finishes with the same scene as the first one of the couple hugging which then allows the audience to make their own choices and judgement about what the video meant.

The Script-The Man Who Can’t Be Moved

At the start of the song the main vocalist, Danny O’Donoghue is walking along a pathway were he then stops at a street corner. At this particular moment the lyrics are ‘going back to the corner, where I first saw you’ are heard which shows a combination of both narrative and performance where the vocalist begins to mime the lyrics to the song which shows a good example of the relationship between the lyrics of the song and the visuals happening on the screen.

The Script is an alternative rock/pop band, and the song features lyrics that we would typically expect from such a band. This song is particularly telling us a story about a couple who have split up and now the man is waiting for his ex-girlfriend to come back to him and he doesn’t want to move on until she does to.

The main man’s image in the video is of casual appearance as no vehicle or anything of higher status to show the audience that he is of little power due to him walking around on his own looking a bit lost. Because the storyline is of such and the atmosphere is busy we expect to see areas of members of the public being featured with cuts of the band performing together, which we do.

The camera focuses on the main vocalist’s voice a lot throughout the sequence of the music video due to him being the star of the music video, and also him being the narrator of the video, and also actually being involved in the story.

The camera angles and the movement allow more contact and emotion with an audience and that attracts and grips an audience in and entertains them.

After about a quarter of the way through the video the entire band in introduces and shown through a cut between the narrative to the performance.

The band members all experience close ups in order to include them properly within the video. The other musicians also contribute to the song which therefore means that they then require screen time as well. Because of the cuts between the performances that are seen in the music video, a whole narrative is shown.

The lighting is natural daylight when he is walking down the street but when he is in the parking lot with the rest of the band the lighting becomes darker and lower.

The rest of the band are also dressed casually which offers a rough edge to their band image and the appearances of the band playing together offers a sort of friendly authenticity to their music.

The narrative of the song continues throughout the video whether it’s the main vocalist or the band or members of the public looking strangely at the lead vocalist because he is not moving from his seat which again shows consistency of a relationship between the lyrics and the video.

LA, LA, LA - NAUGHTY BOY ft. SAM SMITH

This music video has a narrative through out the whole video and the story is in chronological order so that the audience could understand what the video is about. Also the story is told on the main character who is a young and what he does when he is in a difficult situation. The video starts off with a man who is shouting at a young boy who is probably his son and as he shouting at him the boy starts to cover his ears and then the chorus of the song starts ‘’la, la, la’’. This shows the audience that the young boy cannot cope with the with the man shouting because he does run away. This makes the audience feel sympathy for the boy. The director does this to show the audience that when you’re in a situation which you cannot cope in and you’re under a lot of pressure the best thing to do is simply walk away from it.

Furthermore as the young carries on his journey he comes across a few troubled people who are in a situation which they clearly do not enjoy. For example when he sees the man playing music for women in a gym the young boy encourages him to cover his ears and walk away, and then the chorus ‘’la, la, la’’ come on again. This is effective because it shows the audience that the point that the director is trying to get across is that when you’re in a situation which you do not want to be in you can simply walk away and cover your ears so you don’t have to listen it. The video is very successful because the director has made the story clear and its easy to understand, and also the audience were not only entertained by the song and lyrics the video was a significant feature of making this video successful.

SEAN KINGSTON ft. CHRIS BROWN ft. WIZ KHALIFA - BEAT IT

This music video starts off with a lot of women coming out of a pool next a big mansion. These women are instantly shown as sex objects to the audiences as they are all surrounding one of the thee artists. Also the start of the music video the three artists are singing and dancing whilst they a have a nice silver car and green trees in the distance, and they are standing right in front of the house. Therefore this suggests that the men are rich and they are happy because they feel that they have everything. In addition this shows the audience that women just follow men for their money making and the things they buy and wear, and at the same time they are used as sex objects because there is no connotation with the woman being around the men.

Furthermore the mise- en- scene indicates that the women in this video are again being shown as sex objects. This is because they are wearing bikinis, shorts and short dresses. This shows the audience and the people who are watching this video that the women want this attention, because they have nice slim bodies which is also another thing that is appealing to men usually. Another thing about this video is the fact that there is a massive pool and a mansion and at the same time sun is about and there is a nice breeze. Therefore it is suggesting that everything is ‘perfect’and that there is a happy mood and it seems like a party atmosphere. Within the video the video there are a lot of close-ups to the main artists most of the time, this grabs the audiences attention as they like these artists and will definitely enjoy what they’re doing.

Ed Sheeran Give Me Love

The music video has many elements of a narrative video. The most common theme used theme throughout a lot of narrative videos is love and this video has a narrative theme of love throughout the video hence the title‘Give Me Love’.

The target audience for this video are the younger generation between the ages of 15-25 which is also similar to the age of the singer, Ed Sheeran, and also his fans that listen and buy his music. The song is about love and about a person who can’t forget his old love. The music video appeals mostly to females because the video though it may be about a man or women, the video itself speaks mostly towards females.

The video starts with a female in a middle shot that appears to have an arrow in her neck, surrounded by blood which gives the connotation of death or injury. Then it carries on to the next shot, another middle shot of a police officer walking forwards which adds more to the connotations of there being death and the police being the bearer of news with loud sirens surrounding him. This makes you want to find out more about the girl and what has happened as the video starts from the end and then goes backwards to start from the beginning and show what has happened and this also makes you feel sympathetic towards the girl as you think that a big tragedy or something happened that ended up in her dying.

There is then a cut to a shot of a couple kissing which is a very common theme within a lot of pop videos. It then cuts to a medium shot of female looking very sad and depressed. She is dressed in a white vest and has blonde hair which is mostly used to show innocence and purity, which is stereotypically what a young female character is supposed to look like in a pop video. The low key lighting throughout the video creates a gritty feel and the positioning of the young girl in the long shots, by herself, gives the impression that she is very lonely and isolated from the world. This creates a sense of realism which shows that there really are people like that in the world and that breaks the conventions of what is normally shown and associated with in a music video that is shows the theme of love.

There are two shots which show a variety of tools which could potentially be shown to show that there could be a tragedy happening later on in the video because those tools are very dangerous. It then shows a shot of two wooden model’s, a man and a women, holding hands and embracing each other which again shows the theme of love which is shown consistently throughout the video but then the way it is shown in the video isn’t what would normally be shown in a pop video to show the theme of love.

The video then cuts back to a bunch of medium shots showing what looks like the girl trying to scratch or hurt her back and then is shown to be pulling a feather out of her back. The feather is white again showing the theme of innocence but is covered in red blood going back to the idea of a sort of tragedy or injury. It then cuts to a long shot of the girl standing facing away from the camera so you can’t see her face and it shows her standing in the spotlight with a pair of wings. The low key lighting surrounding the spotlight that shines on the girls’ wings makes the shot more clear and shows the audience that she has wings. The wings are white and represent an angel and purity again showing the idea of innocence.

It then cuts to a medium shot of the girl carving arrows with the tools that were shown earlier, and then is shown in a full shot of firing an arrow at one of the women walking past her window. At this point we get the idea that the main lead is cupid as she has wings and is carrying a bow and arrow, also the fact that when she shoots her arrow into people they find love with another. This relates back to the narrative as cupid is a connotation of love. The song is based around love so this meets the audience’s expectation of a video based around a song which is about love, however this shows a more darker and wicked side of love, as the low lighting gives the video almost a dull, sinister feeling and the protagonist herself is shown to be melancholy which plays with the stereotypes in pop genre which shows that love is meant to be a happy, euphoric feeling.

There are then a few shots of people being hit with an arrow and frantically falling in love with the first person they see which lives up to the story of cupid’s arrows. It then shows the girl waiting for a train and then is cut to show her on the train making the audience aware that she has boarded the train and is probably going on to carry on with her job of being cupid.

There is then various close up and medium shots of the people who have been shot by cupid’s arrow kissing showing the more obvious theme of love which is normally shown in a pop music video with the theme of love, but with the dark lighting it seems more intense. However it is then cut to show the girl standing on top of a building perhaps suggesting the power and dominance she has. It also gives the impression that maybe the girl is a bit lost. Even though in this shot she is shown to be wearing white and supposed to be angelic the dark lighting and dark clouds contrasts with this and it creates a feeling of her somehow being forceful and somewhat sombre.

As the song reaches the climax and the pace of the music starts to become more fast the video cuts to showing close ups of people dancing and the girl now stabbing people and them falling in love with the first person they see. There is a blue tint to the lighting now and it makes the video seem more gritty and more harsh. This creates a sense of truth and authenticity which you wouldn’t normally associate with a video about love.

The editing in this sequence is fast and hectic feeling like the time is going fast and like its being fast forwarded, and also keeping with the fast tempo and music of the song.

Once the music starts to slow down the fast pace the video is moving at starts to slow down too and there is a close shot showing the female holding an arrow to her throat and then it cuts back to how the video started with all the police cars going off, and the same police officer shows in the beginning. The end shot is the same as how the video started with the girl with an arrow in her neck except this time her eyes open and the arrow disappears followed by a blurred image of the officer looking at the girl, and is shown in her point of show showing us what she sees, suggesting that she has found love, showing that steadiness and stability has been restored.
